GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A man has been indicted on federal charges for allegedly breaking in to a Grand Rapids gun store and later texting someone that he had done it.
Adam Wayne Campbell is facing 2 federal charges for a break in that happened at LeMasters Hudson, a gun and jewelry store in Grand Rapids, on August 8 of this year. He is charged with theft of firearms from a federal firearms licensee and felon in possession of a firearm for allegedly taking a total of 19 firearms.
Police had responded to the store on August 8 around 5:30 a.m. after an alarm in the building had been tripped. According to court documents, responding officers found the front door smashed out with a brick laying nearby.
The officers say they found display cases smashed, with a number of firearms missing.
At some point following the break in, investigators received a phone call from a woman who said that Campbell had damaged her house and vehicle. She also believed he may have robbed a gun store.
The woman allegedly shared several text messages with investigators that Campbell had sent her just before and after the break in at LeMasters Hudson had occurred.
Investigators soon linked Campbell with the August 8 break in.
The documents allege that Cambell sent the woman a text message just past midnight on the night of the break in that said, “I’m goon to do a armed robbery right now[sic]."
And just minutes later, she says another text came in saying, "Omw to get some guns and jewelry."
The woman also allegedly showed officers pictures that Campbell had sent her in the hours after the robbery in which he was wearing a red bandanna. Investigators say the bandanna matched one seen being worn by the suspect in surveillance video from the break in.
Another photo he sent allegedly showed a pile of handguns, some with price tags still attached that appeared to be the same ones used by LeMasters Hudson.
At one point the woman says she texted Campbell asking where the guns were, to which she says he replied, "I got all of them I guess what I'm about to do.[sic]"
When she later asked if he had used her truck, he allegedly responded, "f------ tell on me if you want to but I don’t give a f-- no more I’m shooting anything that come my way after I kill tracks then I’m million myself.... It will be on the news..... let me be ok [sic].”
The court documents show that Campbell was arrested on August 11 on outstanding warrants and later charged with the August 8 gun store robbery.
According to online records, Campbell was previously convicted of breaking and entering in 2005, 2013 and 2016. He was also convicted of home invasion in the 2nd degree in 2008.
Campbell is expected back in court on September 24 for a detention hearing.
