BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A fire that broke out at the Econo Lodge Tuesday night in Battle Creek is under investigation.
Battle Creek Fire Chief Brian Sturdivant tells FOX 17 that the fire started around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night at the hotel, located at 165 Capital Ave SW.
It took several hours and nearly 30 firefighters to put out the fire.
Two firefighters had to be rescued from inside the building after running low on air but they were not hurt and got out safely.
Sturdivant says the Econo Lodge was shut down for 90 days by the city for compliance issues and is now damaged after a fire.
While it is too early in the investigation to call the fire suspicious, Sturdivant says the timing of the fire does raise some concerns.
The motel was in its first day of being officially shut down by the city to make improvements over the course of 90 days.
We're told no one was hurt in the fire but the cause remains under investigation by the fire marshal.
