BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Makena the giraffe has died, according to Binder Park Zoo.
The beloved giraffe was 21 years old.
The zoo tells us Makena (or “Mak”) had been going through arthritis treatment in both of her front legs through most of last year’s season, as well as a hoof trim and dental check, all of which were performed with anesthetics.
“Subsequent weekly laser therapy, systemic anti-inflammatories and a period of recovery improved her condition significantly,” says veterinarian Dr. Kim Thompson, “and we felt that Mak was on track to rejoin the herd on the savanna in the spring of 2021.”
We’re told Makena was euthanized last week. A giraffe’s lifespan ranges from 15-25 years, the zoo says.
