PORTAGE, Mich. — Portage police are searching for a woman who was caught on surveillance cameras taking packages from a home.
Video shows the woman walking up to the house at night, taking two packages off the porch and walking away.
Police didn’t say where the theft took place, but ask anyone who recognizes the woman to call them at 269-329-4567 or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
Monday is the first day a new state law increasing the penalties for stealing packages stakes effect. Convicted “porch pirates” can face fines and up to a year in jail, with repeat offenders facing as much as five years in prison.
Police advise everyone to be vigilant about when and where their gifts are getting shipped. People ar encouraged to require a signature upon delivery, sign up for tracking alerts, getting security cameras or picking the package up in-person.
