Officers had been called to the cafe before 3:45 p.m. in response to “an unwanted person.”

Police say Dario Agudelo, from Texas, was standing with his hands in the air saying, "I don't want to be detained," seconds before he lunged at a female officer and tackled her to the ground.

The officer, upon walking in Café Rica, asked Agudelo, "can I have you stand up?" According to Battle Creek Police Chief Shannon Bagley, Agudelo complied at first, until the officer tried to handcuff him.

During the struggle with the 29-year-old man, an officer was shot in the leg, police told FOX 17. She was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover.

Chief Bagley describes the situation as tragic and horrific, however he's proud of his team.

"We're sorry that there was a loss of life, but we also feel very blessed that the officer is also going to be fine," he said.

A different officer ended up shooting Agudelo, who was treated on scene, but ended up dying from his injury. That officer now is on leave, and Michigan State Police took over the investigation, per protocol.
