OTSEGO, Mich. — A family in Otsego is thankful for the community's support after a snowmobile crash left two boys seriously injured.
“The support of the community, like at Otsego schools and the community surrounding, communities like Plainwell, has been amazing. So amazing," said Becky Volkers.
Volkers, an aunt to the boys, describes the support as overwhelming, as family and friends are rallying around her two nephews, Jurian (13) and Jaden (10) Shaffer.
The crash left the boys hospitalized at Bronson Methodist, where Sunday evening, dozens gathered to hold the boys a vigil outside the emergency room
"Jurian had a broken leg in three spots. He broke his femur and then his lower leg was broken in two spots," Volkers said. "One of them was a compound fracture that was through the ankle. So he is got some hardware on his lower leg. Kind of like a halo type thing. Jaden has been unresponsive since Wednesday since the accident. And we are just praying really hard that he wakes up."
The family says despite being unresponsive, Jaden is showing improvement, saying after meeting with the neurosurgeon on Monday, no surgery is needed at this point.
“If anybody is out there that could be praying for these boys especially Jaden to just wake up, that would be amazing," Volkers said.
The family has also organized a T-Shirt, Hoodie and Bracelet fundraiser to assist with finanicial needs coming in the near future.
