DORR, Mich. — Deputies in Allegan County surrounded a Dorr home Tuesday evening and the public was advised to “avoid the area”. Now FOX 17 has learned reports that led to that response are not as they seem.
It started around 7:15 p.m.— Police from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), Wayland Police Department, Gun Lake Tribal Police Department, along with the Dorr Fire Department and Wayland EMS surrounded a home on 20th St near 142nd Ave on reports of a break-in and attempted hostage situation that included the homeowner being assaulted by two suspects before getting their hands on a firearm and shooting at them.
The public was advised to “avoid the area” and the street was closed between 142nd and 144th Avenues until around 9:45 p.m.
FOX 17 had a crew on scene and could hear deputies calling for the suspects' surrender over a bullhorn.
Deputies were not able to speak with us at that time.
After several hours, ACSO cleared the scene, saying the area was secure.
In the overnight hours, FOX 17 received a press release saying there "did not appear to be evidence supporting the incident as it was reported."
The investigation remains open, though deputies say there is no threat to the general public.
**A previous version of this article stated there had been reports of a person being shot during the incident. Deputies say there is no evidence to suggest anyone was hit with gunfire.
