HOLLAND, Mich. — A two-year-old child from Elkhart, Indiana died after being hit by a vehicle at the campground at Holland State Park on Tuesday.

First responders say it happened around 7:03 p.m.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, the initial call to officials indicated that lifesaving efforts were being provided by bystanders. The Sheriff's Office's Paramedic Unit, as well as Park Township Fire, later took over lifesaving efforts.

The child was then taken to Zeeland Community Hospital. However, he later died from his injuries.

The investigation showed that a 57-year-old resident of Batavia, Ohio was driving a 2018 Jeep SUV through the park. The two-year-old ran across the park road in front of the Jeep, which then struck the child.

The accident is currently under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office Traffic Services Unit. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office or Silent Observer.
