GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A driver tried to flee from a traffic stop by speeding away and then running away after crashing their vehicle.

At 11:40 p.m. last night, a deputy saw a "reckless driver" in a Dodge Charger in the area of Baldwin and Cottonwood in Georgetown Township, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office this morning.

When the deputy attempted to stop them, the driver sped away toward I-196.

The sheriff's office said there was "a brief pursuit" until the driver lost control. They crashed into a cement wall on the eastbound I-196 Baldwin Street entrance ramp.

The driver then tried to run away, but they were "quickly taken into custody by deputies."

During the incident, the driver was not injured, and no other cars were involved in the crash.

They were lodged at Ottawa County Jail for multiple outstanding warrants, as well as several traffic offenses from the incident.

For about an hour, the Baldwin Street entrance ramp to eastbound I-196 and one lane of eastbound I-196 were closed for an investigation and to remove the suspect's vehicle.

The incident is still under investigation.
