HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A man accused of ramming an Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office cruiser was formally charged on Tuesday.

Alfonzo Mercado is facing charges of felonious assault, fleeing police, resisting an officer and malicious destruction of police property. Authorities say the 60-year-old Holland Township man pulled up next to a deputy who was stopped at a red light, put his car in reverse and rammed into the cruiser.

He was arrested after a short chase.

The deputy was taken to the hospital after his cruiser was hit but has since been released and is back to work.

Authorities say Mercado admitted to intentionally slamming into the vehicle after becoming upset with another deputy earlier in the day.
