UPDATE: Man arrested as shelter in place order in Spring Lake Township is lifted

8:30 p.m. update: A standoff that started early Wednesday morning ended peacefully after about 15 hours.

With the critical incident being resolved, residents of Spring Lake Township are now free to exit their homes with the shelter in place being lifted.

This standoff ended around 6:50 p.m. after the man left the residence and was arrested without incident.

The man is being treated medically and will be lodged in Ottawa County Jail.

The man has been charged with the following, authorized by the Ottawa County Prosecuting Attorney's Office:

  • Unlawful Imprisonment
  • Felon in Possession of a Firearm
  • Felonious Assault
  • Felony Firearm
  • Resisting and Obstructing Police
  • Fleeing and Eluding Police
  • Being a Habitual Offender.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office would like to thank the public for their patience as we worked for a peaceful conclusion to this event. This incident remains under investigation.

Authorities say the critical incident started around 2 a.m. in the area of Palm Drive near Hoffmaster Drive in Spring Lake Township, when Ottawa County Sheriff's Office units attempted a traffic stop on a wanted individual.

Instead of stopping, the individual returned to a home on Palm Drive, where he had brief contact with deputies before fleeing inside and refusing orders to come out.

Deputies determined he was armed with a firearm.

They also learned there was a woman inside the home who was in a relationship with the wanted man.

According to police, no one was injured throughout the incident.
