HOLLAND, Mich. — A homicide suspect that ran from police, prompting an hours-long shelter-in-place notice, is now in custody.
The suspect caused an hours-long shelter-in-place for people on Abbey Court and Stratford Way.
It all started overnight when police say the suspect shot and killed someone he knew and ran off.
The victim was found in a car in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds.
That's when the cross-city manhunt began.
A suspect description was sent out to the community, cruisers and SWAT teams were on many nearby major intersections, and K9s searched the surrounding streets.
Then it all came to a head near 12th and Dartmouth around 8:30 a.m., where the suspect was taken into custody.
Police say a call was received about a suspicious person possibly matching the description of the suspect nearby. Officers found the suspect and took him into custody without incident.
We did see a person on a stretcher surrounded by police, being taken away.
According to Holland police, neither the suspect nor the victim lived in the apartment complex where the shooting took place.
It all happened steps away from Holland Heights Elementary School where initially a late start was announced for the school. The school has now been closed for the day.
"After we got the news about a suspect being in custody, and we knew that there would be police presence around the building, so it was just better to close this building for the day to keep everybody away, and make sure that everybody was safe, and that they could do the work that they needed to do here," said Jason Craner, Holland Public Schools communications director.
The school district says all the normal bus routes are still in place for the rest of the day and that counselors are available to help students and staff.
