SILVER CREEK TWP., Mich. — One person has died and two others have been hospitalized after a crash involving three snowmobiles.
According to the Cass County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened just after 10 p.m. Saturday, on a snowmobile trail near the intersection of Indian Lake Road and Topash Street.
Officials say 21-year-old Robert Schroeder, of Coloma, and 38-year-old Andrew Mayer, of Covert, were heading west on that trail, when they collided with 45-year-old Keith Webster, of Elkhart, Indiana, who had been traveling in the opposite direction.
The three men were approaching a hill when that crash occurred, according to the sheriff's office. Webster died as a result of his injuries; meantime, Schroeder was airlifted to a hospital in South Bend, Indiana, and Mayer was taken by ambulance to a hospital in St. Joseph.
All three men were reportedly wearing helmets at the time of the crash. It isn't known if alcohol or drugs played a role, but speed is believed to have been a factor.
The crash remains under investigation.
