Man pleads guilty in slaying near northern Michigan lake

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — A 19-year-old former California man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the slaying of a homeless man in northern Michigan.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that Joshua Vandehoef entered his plea Thursday in 13th Circuit Court. Sentencing is scheduled for April 24.

The body of James Chisholm, 62, was found May 29 by hikers about 15 yards from Boardman Lake in Traverse City. He had been living in a tent. and his throat had been slashed.

Police believe Chisholm had been in the area about three weeks.

Vandehoef was arrested in July.
