DOUGLAS TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Police arrested a suspect in the homicide of Vayda Vazquez Wednesday afternoon.

David Cope of the Michigan State Police says a 36 year-old woman from Stanton was arrested at about 4 p.m. Charges include Open Murder, 1st Degree Child Abuse, and Felony Murder.

Vasquez was found unresponsive at her babysitter's house just before her 2nd birthday. Emergency crews tried to revive her but were unsuccessful. Her death was quickly ruled a homicide by police.

Tonia Rose, Vasquez's grandma, spoke to FOX 17 when the investigation started, saying she was told something was wrong by a friend who saw emergency crews at the babysitter's home.

The suspect is not being identified by police at this time, but is being held in the Montcalm County Jail. FOX 17 reached out to the Montcalm County Sheriff and Prosecutor's office for comment or confirmation of the woman's identify, but have not heard back.
