LANSING, Mich. — Investigators have made an arrest in a nearly 37-year-old cold case in Newaygo County.
Twenty-five-year-old Richard Atwood disappeared from White Cloud in August of 1983. His vehicle was recovered in the Grand Rapids area about two months later, but his body has never been found.
For decades, investigators have been working to recover his body and determine what happened to him. In 2016, authorities put out a request for tips hoping new information and advancements in forensic technology would help them find the person responsible for Atwood's disappearance.
On Friday, the Michigan Attorney General's office announced the arrest of 55-year-old Roy Snell, who was the last person to be seen with Atwood. Snell was taken into custody in Minnesota and is being charged with felony murder and felony firearm. Snell is facing a maximum penalty of life in prison.
The attorney general's office didn't say what new evidence led to Snell's arrest. He is currently being held in Minnesota and will be brought to Michigan for arraignment.
