MICHIGAN — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is a contender for TIME magazine’s Person of the Year.

She’s up against Dr. Anthony Fauci, essential workers, Black Lives Matter activists, President-elect Joe Biden, President Joe Biden and more.

The governor has made several headlines this year, including during the plot to kidnap her that was unveiled in October.

Whitmer has also been outspoken about her disagreement with how President Donald Trump’s administration has handled the coronavirus pandemic, and has garnered both praise and disdain for her handling of the pandemic in the state.

TIME allows readers to vote on who they think should win the award, but its editors ultimately decide the winner.
