COLON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 24-year-old man drowned in a lake on the Fourth of July.
At about 3:50 p.m. on Saturday, deputies responded to a drowning call at Leidy Lake Campground in Colon Township, according to the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office this morning.
The sheriff's office said David Burns Jr. of Bellevue, who didn't know how to swim, was walking in Leidy Lake, when he "unknowingly walked into deep water."
His family members and other witnesses recovered him from the lake, and he was not breathing. They took him by boat to the beach and began lifesaving measures.
Lifecare Ambulance medics and Colon Fire/Rescue personnel attempted to revive Burns, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office and its marine patrol were also assisted by the Colon Police Department.
