MARSHALL, Mich. — State police investigated fraud complaints involving an elderly person in St. Joseph County.

One person was in contact with someone claiming to be his grandson and had been injured in a crash, adding that he needed close to $10,000 to cover medical and legal fees, according to Michigan State Police.

We’re told the victim mailed the money out to the scammer before being asked to send more of the same amount.

State police wish to advise residents to employ skepticism when a supposed loved one solicits money over the phone and to never send cash through the mail.

They also say scammers tend to claim to have been in an accident or that they are in legal trouble. Confirm with other family members to make sure that the caller’s story checks out.
