People who were inside or near the hospital at the time of the shooting recalled their experiences with us.
“Right as we were about to walk through the door, some girl was like ‘don't go in there. Don't go in there. There's a shooting,'” Matt Williams said.
Williams and his friend Marc Garling first thought it was a joke. The woman warned them a shooting had just occurred and the gunman was on the loose. Their skepticism lasting but for so long.

“Every minute to 30 seconds, it would be passing to 20 seconds, we would be counting three or four cops from every other county coming through — Madison Heights, Royal Oak, we saw even Southfield," Williams said. "It was wild.”
As they were heading out, more officers started coming in.
"Everyone's at the hospital to get help and then that happens. How much more helpless can you feel?” Garling said.
Angela Penrose was a patient inside the hospital at the time.
“There was some banging on my door and a guy said ‘sheriff’ and he came in and he was one of the SWAT guys. And he had a flashlight and a big assault rifle and he said 'is there anybody in here with you.' I said ‘no, I'm alone.’ He said ‘you OK?’ I said ‘yes I'm fine’ and he said ‘stay in your room.’

Renee Schuppe, who lives nearby, said it’s terrifying that something like this happened at a hospital.
"Obviously, whenever anything like that happens in your own neighborhood, it's going to raise some serious concern. My other two children were in the home, and so I immediately step outside once I saw the amount of cops coming up and say ‘are we safe. Are we ok?’" Schuppe said.
"It's just when or how is it going to stop? Feels like nothing is safe anymore. I was just talking to my mom and she was like ‘I was just scheduled for a mammogram’ — just knowing it could happen at any time is just terrifying."
Police say the suspect and the victim were friends, but it appears they had a falling out.
"Unfortunately, I feel like these things happen so often that this time, it was just really close to home," Schuppe said.

That’s when Jo Addington, an ultrasound technician, was sitting in her car just outside the structure before heading into work.
“I was talking to my friend and I thought what I heard was gunshots. But I wasn't sure if it was a car backfiring or what it was. And so I sat there for a few minutes and I said ‘well, I guess I'm gonna walk in,’” Addington said.

When she started walking in, she said people came running out of the structure and yelling about an active shooter.
“I didn't know what to do. I mean, all of a sudden, all these cops were coming. You know, the policemen were coming and they blocked everything off and I knew a back exit. So I got out of there as quick as I could,” she said.
“I’m still shaking. I was so scared.”
