GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Helen DeVos Children's Hospital celebrated ten years inside its well-known blue tower on medical mile on Monday.
“We opened on 1/11/11 and here we are 10 years later and the time is just zoomed by,” said Dr. James Fahner, the Division Chief of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology.
Each year the hospital handles 5,600 emergency department visits, performs 8,700 surgeries, and cares for 1,400 newborns in the ICU.
While the numbers and impact on the community are easy to spot, Dr. Hossain Marandi, the hospital's president says it truly stands as a beacon of hope for families in West Michigan.
“As soon as you walk in through those doors that atmosphere is just loving caring and a wonderful atmosphere they just think of you and wanting to be a part of this community, a part of this care that we provide and that’s what we want to continue to preserve.”
