KALAMAZOO, Mich. — You can probably smell Heilman’s Nuts and Confections before you get there.
“We actually cook everything right here in the in the building. Not too many places do that anymore,” says co-owner Rose Herder. So, you could be smelling the roasting aromas of Spanish peanuts, redskins, cashews, pecans, almonds, or macadamia nuts.
And then there’s the chocolate.
But with the pandemic, Heilman’s will make allowances: “We open at 10 o'clock, but I'm usually here by eight,” notes Herder, “so if they want to come in, I tell them give me a call. Let me know you're outside; I will let you in. And that way they're shopping alone and not with a few other people in the store.”
Or Heilman’s will arrange delivery, which they already have experience with. “We've been getting corporates saying, ‘We can't spend as much,’ but they ask us if we could least ship it to the employee's home. That's what we've been doing.”
