VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. — Several Van Buren County school superintendents have signed a letter urging the state to allowing winter contact sports to resume.

Winter contact sports include basketball, competitive cheer and wrestling.

The letter was addressed to MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and MDHHS Chief Medical Executive and Chief Deputy Director Dr. Joneigh Khaldun.

Superintendents say that not only have schools shown themselves to be good at mitigating the risks of COVID-19, but also must "take further steps to assure the social and emotional well-being of students," the letter said.

Fans at competitions would be strictly limited.

The letter also asks officials to share any data that might indicate that resuming contact sports under safety protocols would not be safe, saying that the superintendents have not seen such data.
