PORTAGE, Mich. — Portage Northern head football coach Pete Schermerhorn has been named the Detroit Lions coach of the week.
Schermerhorn's Huskies won at Mattawan 36-6 last Friday night to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Portage Northern is coming off back-to-back seasons in which it won both a conference and district championship.
Schermerhorn is in his 29th season as a varsity head coach and 27th at his alma mater.
He has led the Huskies to a 142-114 record, six conference championships and 14 playoff appearances.
Portage Northern is getting set to play its first home game of the 2020 season this Friday night against Gull Lake.
The Huskies host rival Portage Central on October 9th.
