DETROIT — The Detroit Lions will host the Washington Commanders in the NFC Divisional playoff round next weekend at Ford Field.

The now 13-5 Commanders beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20 on a game-winning field goal that hit the post and went in.

The Commanders have won four straight games, beating the Eagles, Falcons, and Cowboys in their final three games of the regular season.

The Lions and Commanders have not played yet this season, but there is a history with the Washington franchise meeting in the playoffs, with Washington winning all three previous games.

The first was a Wildcard in 1982, when Washington beat the Lions, 31-7.

Detroit loss, another Wildcard match-up in 1999.

And you can ask any long-time Lions fan about the third loss in the 1991 NFC Championship game.

Back then Detroit was being led by legendary running back Barry Sanders, and while they were underdogs, there was a lot of hype for Detroit following their upset win against Dallas the week before. But, the Lions got pummeled by Washington, losing by more than 30 points.

Of course - both teams have changed a lot since then and the last time they faced off in 2022, the Lions won by nine points, 36 to 27.

More good news is it seems more likely the Lions will be getting back star running back David Montgomery who suffered an MCL injury three weeks ago.

FOX 17 will air the game live starting at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18.
