(WXMI) — The Grand Rapids Griffins and Sled Wings played in their 18th annual sled hockey game on Monday night with all proceeds benefiting the Sled Wings and the Griffins Youth Foundation.

The Sled Wings became the first junior-level sled hockey team in Michigan starting in 2001. They have won two national championships since and developed six players for the United States National Team.
"It's a fun night for everybody. Our players get to try something new. It's always great to see the kids kind of school our guys and show them the real way to play," Griffins head coach Dan Watson said.
"What people don't see behind the scenes is the Griffin's Youth Foundation is just amazing. So many kids play hockey for free in this area and then they support us along with Mary Free Bed. Without the community that we have here, literally these kids wouldn't be able to play hockey," Sled Wings head coach Steve Koz said.
