MICHIGAN — The #LetThemPlay Michigan coalition held a news conference Tuesday morning, announcing a lawsuit against the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services that aims to push the state to allow winter contact sports to begin immediately.
Last month, the state announced that the start of play would be pushed back again from Feb. 1 to Feb. 21, drawing criticism from high school athletes, parents and other community members.

Peter Ruddell, an attorney acting on behalf of the coalition, emphasized data from both Michigan and other states that do allow winter contact sports, saying there is a "very low" amount of transmission of COVID-19 among young athletes.
The lawsuit was filed against MDHHS director Elizabeth Hertel.
