LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan High School Athletic Association held a news conference Thursday afternoon, announcing non-contact sports can resume next week. Activities that can resume include basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey and wrestling.

Each sport will have to adhere to mask or rapid testing guidelines, which vary from each activity.

Basketball and hockey players will need to wear face coverings at all times during practices and games. A testing requirement may allow participants to remove masks while in active participation on the ice.

For competitive cheer, teams must wear masks at all times during practice or training sessions. When competing, cheerleaders may opt not to wear masks because they do not have to be near opponents.

Wrestling is the only sport that requires a match day rapid test. Each participant must test negative the day of to compete in matches. Competitors will not be required to wear face coverings as a result. The tests will provided free of charge.

It comes as the state announces that the ban on winter contact sports will be lifted Feb. 8.
