(WXMI) — Kalamazoo College is bringing back its track and field team for the first time since the 1980's. The track and field team will start competition in the 2025 school year.
When Kyle Morrison took over the cross country program who years ago, his goal was to bring back track and field to K College.
"Getting it to the point where it was on the table for consideration was incredibly exciting. And now that we're here, I'm excited to venture into this new territory," said Morrison.
Both the men's and women's teams will compete in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) indoor and outdoor seasons. Since the announcement was made last week, one alumni of the program made a six-figure donation to help fund the teams as they prepare to compete in 2025.
There are no plans to build a track or other facilities to support the sport at this time. Kalamazoo College will rent facilities from Western Michigan University and compete and other colleges in the conferences.
Athletic Director Jamie Zorbo said that the renewal of the track and field program will be beneficial for current and prospective athletes.
"I've heard from our current student athletes that they're excited about being able to participate in track and field in the future. We're eager to get it going and see it come to fruition," said Zorbo.
Men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field will bring K’s total number of varsity athletics teams to 22 along with men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, and tennis, in addition to baseball and football for men, and volleyball and softball for women.
