TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo Mud Hens are extending the safety netting down the foul lines and behind home plate at Fifth Third Field.

New netting will extend about 250 feet from its previous end point down to the foul poles and increase the height behind home plate.

The Mud Hens are using a lighter net down the foul lines, which help with fan visibility through the net. The team says the design maintains an area for interactions between players on fans on the home plate side of each dugout.

Toledo is the AAA affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Detroit extended its safety netting at Comerica Park in 2018, which has been a trend throughout MLB.

The new netting will be installed by the Mud Hens’ home opener on April 16.
