WEST MICHIGAN - Most communities along and north of I-96 remains in a SLIGHT RISK for strong to severe storms this afternoon and evening. See image attached to this story (yellow outlined area). Hail and wind are the primary threats. We could see hail between one inch and 1.25" with this system and/or up to 60 mph wind gusts. Anytime after your lunch hour you want to stay weather aware as around 2-3 p.m. until midnight is the main time frame for severe weather.
Areas along and south of I-96 remain in a MARGINAL risk for severe storms due to a "cap" or lid on the atmosphere that can prevent thunderstorms from forming. We will keep an eye on any possible activity through the day.
Winds will also increase through the day from the southwest at 10 to 20 perhaps 15 to 25 mph with gusts upwards of 40 to 45 mph. Temperatures push into the low/mid 80s under partly cloudy skies before showers and storms arrive later on. High humidity will be present as well with dew points pushing into the upper 80s.
We expect a cold front to blast through the state in the afternoon/evening as this should generate scattered strong, possibly severe storms at that time with up to one inch hail and up to 60 mph winds being the biggest threat.
Showers and storms will continue into the evening as this cold front is very slow moving. Behind this front we will lose our heat and humidity and relax our winds a bit. Showers and storms continue into and throughout the day on Saturday with a scattered fashion. We have a MARGINAL risk for severe storms again on Saturday.
High pressure moves in on Sunday to dry us out as we wrap up the weekend with sunshine and kick off next week with it as well! Temperatures remain cooler in the 60s. Make sure to download the Fox 17 weather app and stay safe.
