A rollover crash on I-96 east of Portland sent hospital people to a Lansing hospital Sunday.

A 2009 Jeep driven by Karen McCarthy, 56, was westbound near Clintonia Road around the 82 mile marker when it struck a sign, then the cable guard rail. The Jeep rolled several times, and two people were ejected, said Michigan State Police.

One passenger told troopers the Jeep drifted toward the cable barrier, and he yelled at the driver. The reason for the drifting is still unknown, said MSP.

McCarthy and a 16-year-old male passenger were flown by Aeromed to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, while two others who were in the Jeep, a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl were taken there by ambulance.

Their conditions at the hospital were not known.

The westbound lanes of I-96 were closed for about an hour after the crash, which occurred shortly before 6 p.m.

I was in this "brief" two hour dead stop.
If the Rude drivers would utilize the left lane FOR PASSING ONLY we could avoid a lot of such issues. The cables did the job. I hope they tested the driver for booze too. I have never seen as many drunk morons than this afternoon/evening. "Brief" right……

I was in it too. And I saw lots of idiocy. People impatient and driving up the sides of the road. Driving the wrong way down the side of the road too. I’m surprised there weren’t more accidents.

The bottom line is people were hurt. You have no right to acuse the driver of being "a drunk moron" 4 very good people were hurt and the people or their community are worrying about them so before you make such serious allegations, you should probably think about there families and friends.

Absolutely! I was one of the few people who stopped to help and it was indescribable. All were hurt VERY badly including children. A family just on their way home from Thanksgiving holiday. Even their pet was injured and i have her now and she is getting better. Don’t judge! Be compassionate to a family who had a tragic accident that no one wanted!

idunno maybe the cable making Human Frizzbees is the REAL problem………. duh. This ain't the first tossing nor will it be the last.

I was there, also; just a few minutes after it happened. Emergency vehicles were just beginning to arrive. To all the citizens who immediately stopped to help these people, I say thank you and God bless you. It was indeed a very, very bad accident.
In my opinion, if there had been a real guard rail, and more of a shoulder than the 18″ to 24″ one that is all along the freeway, the outcome could have been far more positive. The vehicle took out completely a long section of the post-and-cable barrier, and looked to have gotten tangled up with it. Could it have contributed to the multiple rollovers? I hope the vehicle didn’t roll over ON the metal poles – they are not very tall.
Please keep all the families involved in your prayers, give your own family some hugs, and please drive carefully and safely.
