VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. –

A 27-year-old South Haven woman was arrested after leading police on a chase and then assaulting an officer.

The initial traffic stop happened in the City of Hartford near Center and Shepard.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department said they tried to stop a 1998 Oldsmobile   for a traffic violation. Police say the female driver gave the Hartford officer a fraudulent out of state drivers license.

When the officer questioned the woman’s identity, she tried to flee the vehicle.

Then, the officer attempted to restrain the woman, but she hit the gas and dragged the patrolman.

As the driver took off, the officer went back to the police car and the chase began.

Police called for backup and the female driver attempted to ram the patrol cars several times, police added.

The pursuit continued through Van Buren county ending when the suspect crashed the Oldsmobile in a ditch on Red Arrow Hwy just east of 59 1/2 Street.

The female suspect then ran off and the chase continued.

The K9 unit was called in and tracked the female suspect into a heavily wooded and swampy area near the Van Buren County Fairgrounds.

Police said the woman was found hiding in a heavily wooded area and was taken into custody.

The Hartford officer was taken to Watervliet Hospital where he was treated and released.
