Several people were able to escape from separated apartment units inside a Grand Rapids home on Saturday evening because of working smoke detectors.

Crews were called to the home that houses separate units on Cass SE after a fire started in one of the upstairs units that was unoccupied at the time.

Fire investigators on scene tell FOX17 they believe the cause was electrical, but they’re still investigating.

Crews were able to contain the fire and smoke damage to the upstairs units, none of the downstairs units were affected.

There was damage to the upstairs units that will need to be repaired, but damage estimates are yet to be finalized.

Smoke detectors activated throughout the building, alerting other occupants who managed to get outside safely.  Nobody was hurt.
