Calhoun Co. Corrections Officer Charged With Sex With 15-Year-Old Boy

CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. – A corrections officer from Calhoun County is charged with having sex with a 15-year-old boy and soliciting sex for money from an 18-year-old man he may have met online.

Troy Pope, 26, appeared in Calhoun County Court for arraignment Tuesday.

He faces one count of third degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of accosting a child for immoral purposes and two counts of soliciting for prostitution.

Michigan State Police say they were contacted Sunday with the accusations.

The information originally came through the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and the MSP launched an investigation.

Troy was questioned and arrested Monday as he was going into work.

“It’s people that he knew or had become acquainted with at some point in time and kept in contact with them through social networking sites,” said Chuck Christensen, Michigan State Police Detective 1st Lt.

Pope allegedly had sex with a 15-year-old boy in the parking lot of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge in Springfield more than a year ago.

The second accusation alleged Troy solicited sex from an 18-year-old within the past two weeks.

Defense Attorney Thomas Schaeffer says Troy has no prior criminal history and has worked for the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office for four to five years.

Schaeffer says he needs to review the police reports for more information, but did shed light on how the accusations may have come to light.

“My understanding it was generated from a person who was arrested for another crime,” said Schaeffer. “I don’t even know what the crime was.”

Troy’s father, Thomas Pope, a retired undersheriff from Calhoun County, was present in court to support his son.

Troy was given a $25,000 bond and will be staying with his father upon release.

      Actually you are. He was caught by his own Agency, turned over to the State Police for an investigation that would be impartial in substance as well as appearance, and was incarcerated in less than 24 hours. Fool.

    Obviously Harry is ignorant on how law enforcement agencies police themselves. Unfortunately a bad apple gets through the per-employment screening procedures which in turn make the public feel their local agencies are staffed by employees that ignore or feel they are above the laws that they are sworn to enforce.

    When the law enforcement agency is advised that one of their staff members has either violated an agency policy or committed a crime is immediately investigated and the findings are submitted to the agencies Human Resourses and Professional Standards division and the Sheriff or the Chief of Police are immediately notified. Should it be found that an employee has violated a policy the employee will be interviewed by the Professional Standards Unit the employee could be suspended from duty for up to 30 days depending on the seriousness of the violated policy. When it has been determined the employee may have committed a criminal act, the employee wil be immediately placed on administrative leave and the criminal investigation will be turned over to another agency that also shares jurisdiction where the violation occurred. This is done not only to insure that no favoritism is given to the employee or the agency. Once the investigation has been completed the investigating agency submits their findings to the prosecuting attorneys office for review. If the investigation shows that all of the necessary elements of the law are substantiated the Prosecutors Office will seek a warrant. Once a warrant has been issued, the employee can then be arrested and brought before the Court. At that point the Court will determine that a crime had been committed and that the employee committed the offense.

    With all these checks and balances written into the agencies policies and procedures keeps the agencies and their employees are above reproach. After 30 years in law enforcement I can't think of one complaint that was swept under the rug and how we police our own is being watched closely by the public. when it's all said and done all we have is our professionalism and integrity and there is no room for any law enforcement employee that does not follow the agencies standards.

      greg who gives a shit? do you really expect people to believe things dont get "swept under the rug"? these things happen deal with it. im sure smaller less important things get over looked and probably more so as time goes on. its obviously getting worse if you pay attention to the news.
