Avoid Fee, Clear Sidewalk

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The City of Grand Rapids is reminding everyone to clear their sidewalks.

Property owners are responsible for the removal of snow and ice from the sidewalk adjacent to their property within 24 hours of snowfall.

If a property owner does not clear their sidewalk, the City may do it and charge the cost and fees to the owner in violation.

How about not "blowing" the snow back out into the road! The chute will rotate. Big snow piles at the end of one's drivway creates bad blind spots for other drivers!

I clear my driveway and sidewalk and a path near the mailbox for the mail truck. My complaint is that the plow comes thru and piles the snow at the end of my driveway and along the curb near the mailbox and I end up clearing the mailbox path twice. I wish the plow would push all of the snow the the end of the road that is actually a dead end!!! I cannot figure out why the plow does not do this???

How about making sure the plows that go through don't spew the snow that we've removed BACK into our driveways and our sidewalks. Can I charge the city every time I need dig my driveway out of the muck that is now heavier and thicker than what I originally removed? Let's see…I charge $65/hr for freelance work. it takes me about an hour and a half to blow the snow.

The City has the nerve to threaten to fine citizens for not clearing their sidewalks when the sidewalk in the city owned pocket park at Logan and Prospect SE hasn't seen snow removal for at least two winter seasons. They haven't shown up this winter yet. The neighbors finally banded together on Saturday to clear it themselves. Hypocrisy. Maybe they should allocate resources to do the work of clearing snow on their own properties rather than paying someone to write the ticket, enforce the ticket, and collect the fines. Lead by example.
