LANSING, Mich. – State Sen. Rick Jones is trying to pass legislation that would require registered sex offenders to pay an annual fee in efforts to help maintain the state’s sex offender registry.
Current registered sex offenders are required to pay a one-time $50 registration fee, even though some offenders register for 25 years to life, according to a news release from Jones.
“Indiana charges $50 per year; Illinois and Ohio charge $100 per year,” Jones said in the release.
Jones also mentioned that as a result of not requiring sex offenders to pay an annual fee, the money needed to fund the registry comes from taxpayers.
“This is a common sense initiative that surrounding states already have in place,” Jones said.
