BIG BEAR, Calif.  —  CNN is reporting that San Bernardino County Sheriff’s investigators found charred human remains within the ashes of the torched cabin where fugitive former police officer Christopher Dorner was barricaded. The department said it will work to identify the remains.

The discovery follows a shooting that occurred after Dorner burglarized a home, tied up a couple and stole their vehicle, the LA Times reported.

Police said one of the victims managed to escape and call police.

Police got a description of the vehicle and set up a road block when they were approached by Dorner.

Dorner then opened fire, killing a sheriff deputy and wounding another.

An intense fire burned for hours after SWAT teams stormed the cabin.  It was ignited from smoke devices detonated by police.

The 33-year-old has been on the run since last week.  He’s suspected of killing a former police captain’s daughter and her fiance.  He also killed one officer and injured two others after reportedly failing to steal a boat in San Diego.

Dorner wrote an angry manifesto aimed at the LAPD, which fired him five years ago.  He named dozens of police officers and their families as targets.
