DETROIT, Mich. — Apparently winning an Olympic gold medal is a good way to keep a gig.
After leading Canada to hockey gold in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock has been picked to lead Team Canada into the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia.
Red Wings legend Steve Yzerman – now general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning – is also Team Canada’s executive director.
Babcock led the Canadians to a thrilling overtime win against the United States in the 2010 gold medal game.
The Red Wings have been to the playoffs in all eight of Babcock’s seasons in Detroit, including a Stanley Cup title in 2008.
