ANN ARBOR, Mich. — History was made at the Big House on the first day of 2014.
A world-record crowd of 105,491 watched the Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout at Michigan Stadium. The crowd was the largest ever for a hockey game.
Tyler Bozak scored the final goal of the shootout to clinch the Maple Leafs win. Bozak also scored the Maple Leafs second goal of the game, on a redirection past Jimmy Howard in the third period to give the Leafs a 2-1 lead.
Muskegon’s Justin Abdelkader tied the game with 5:32 left in the third period to force overtime.
Red Wings forward Daniel Alfredsson started the scoring in the second period, when a Henrik Zetterberg pass went off Alfredsson’s skate and past Maple Leafs netminder Jonathan Bernier. James van Riemsdyk tied the game at 1-1 for Toronto when he scored with a little over 36 seconds left in the second period.
