PAW PAW, Mich.–  An hours-long police standoff ends with the man at the center of it all surrendering to officers without further incident.

Police got a call around 10:00 p.m. Wednesday for shots fired, and a possible domestic assault at a home near East Paw Paw and Brown Streets. Michigan State Police said a woman was able to get away from the home, but the man stayed inside, armed with a handgun.

Several police agencies surrounded the neighborhood for several hours. Grand Rapids Police even brought their armored vehicle.

The man eventually came out and was taken into custody, but investigators still have several questions.

“We always try to establish some type of history of violence or any type of reasons behind their behavior,” said Lt. Dale Hinz with the Michigan State Police Paw Paw post. “We always take that into consideration. Obviously the scene is a close neighborhood here so we have to be concerned about the safety of the other citizens and tonight the extreme weather conditions are another thing that have to be factored in as well.”

The suspect was taken to the hospital for self-inflicted gunshot wounds, but he is expected to survive.

Police haven’t released his name or the charges he could be facing.
