NORTON SHORES, Mich. — A series of crashes on southbound US-31 between I-96 and Sternberg Road blocked the highway Friday morning.
At one point, the Norton Shores Police Department sent out word that drivers should avoid the area.
The problems began shortly after 7 a.m., and the highway was not completely cleared until just before 9 a.m.
Traffic was at a standstill back to Sherman Boulevard, and the ramps leading from I-96 and Seaway Drive to southbound US-31 were locked up. Frustrated drivers were seen turning around and going the wrong way on the ramp to get out of the traffic jam.
