(CNN) –– Former Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, have been charged with accepting illegal gifts, a U.S. official said on Tuesday.
The federal charges were filed in Richmond.
The one-term Republican, who left office earlier this month, was once considered a potential White House contender in 2016.
