BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — He’s the father of international R&B superstar Mary J. Blige. 63-year-old Thomas Blige is in critical condition after police say he was stabbed by his ex-girlfriend.
Detectives said that Blige confronted her outside his apartment, where he caught his ex-lover slashing the tires on his SUV.
“We were able to take a statement from Mr. Blige prior to him having to go to the hospital. His statement did help with the investigation,” said Det. Sgt. Jim Martens with the Battle Creek Police Department.
Blige made it inside his apartment where a call to 9-1-1 was made. The suspect fled the scene.
Maurice Lewis lives in the apartment above Blige. He didn’t see the alleged attack, but woke up to the commotion that followed.
“I heard a lot of noise, just today, and when I came out, there was just blood everywhere on the ground,” said Lewis.
Detectives said that Blige and his ex are no stranger to police. Officer’s have been called to his home at least six times for prior domestic incidents, including an arrest for her just before Halloween.
FOX 17 obtained her record, which shows assault charges. She was later sentenced for aggrivated domestic violence.
“The last few months, it’s just been a whole bunch of arguing, a whole bunch of fighting. Like in the summer time when I moved here, it was crazy,” said Lewis.
Lewis said that this isn’t the first time the ex has gone after Blidge’s SUV.
“She had her car parked right here, got out of the car, took 2 or 3 rocks and threw it at the back of his Explorer right there,” said Lewis.
The ex was arrested at a nearby apartment Thursday morning shortly after the stabbing. Attempted murder charges are expected.
Lewis said that he and others in the area were surprised to hear their neighbor is the father of the nine time Grammy award winner.
