GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- The scraping, dusting and shoveling is a rite of passage here in West Michigan.

We spoke with people digging out their cars who are sharing the lessons they’ve learned so you avoid making their mistakes.

Julia Heiche left her car on a Grand Rapids street over the weekend.  She was unable to free it from its cold captivity until a nice man stopped to help her.

“This is the last one in the wintertime,” Heiche said, adding she’s learned her lesson.

Another woman digging out her car warns to get started before Sunday night, “so that we can get the plows out here to shovel all this out so we can come park our cars and Monday morning we can go to work and not have to call in.”

Others like Tina Steadman say that people not following odd/even parking rules is her pet peeve and also a serious danger.

“That’s my biggest fear because the fire trucks will not get down,” Steadman said.

But, in the end, sometimes it just takes a little trial and error and West Michigan winter experience to survive the snow.
