Grand Rapids, Mich. (Feb 18, 2014) — Over the past two weeks, a lot of people have gone to the Lake Michigan shoreline to “walk on water,” since it has been ice-covered due to the cold winter. However, the coldest part of the winter is long gone, and the amount of ice on the lake is decreasing quickly.
The map above shows the extent of ice coverage on Lake Michigan. As of 7:00pm Monday, it’s less than 65%. Just a few days ago, it was over 80%. Even along the immediate shore, the coverage has dropped significantly.
There have already been some water rescues. Please don’t make yourself one of them. It is becoming increasingly dangerous to venture out into Lake Michigan.
We will of course continue to update you on the lake ice coverage. For the latest forecast, join us on FOX 17 News or visit the weather page at http://www.fox17online.com/weather
