LIVE BLOG: Wicked Weather Causing Problems
WEST MICHIGAN (Feb. 21, 2014) — Changes in West Michigan weather Friday are resulting in a wide variety of problems. Here are some of the main issues anticipated through the rest of the day:
- Icy roads as temperatures drop into the 20s
- Winds gusting in excess of 50 mph, causing power outages and other damage
- Snow accumulations of one to two inches, mainly north of I-196 and west of U.S. 131

Southbound US-131 after 142ND Ave Exit 168 is now
open per MDOT.
BREAKING: Southbound US-131 after 142nd Ave Exit 68 is
closed due to a jack knifed semi per MDOT.
Westbound I-96 at 68th Avenue is closed due to a crash per Ottawa County Central Dispatch.
Westbound traffic on I-96 shall divert at Exit 16 onto 68th Ave and head north. Turn left on Cleveland St. and head west. Turn left on 112th Ave continue south. Turn right on the I-96 westbound entrance ramp.
From Holland Police: M-40 is shut down NB and SB again due to a MULTI vehicle crash…M-40 south of 143rd
Southbound US-131 at 142nd Ave Exit 68 is now
open per MDOT.

“Road conditions in Muskegon/Oceana County have deteriorated to the worst we have seen all year. High winds icy conditions have created an extremely dangerous driving conditions we have shut off several areas for towing response we had 1 wrecker struck this morning there are several semi accidents in the area and a county cruiser that has been struck several times on heights Ravenna rd. by moorland with the officer receiving unknown injuries.I will keep you posted as more develops.”
Eastbound M-45 (Lake Michigan Drive) entrance to Eastbound I-196 is now open.

From the Isabella Co. Sheriff’s Dept: Please stay off
US-127 from the Gratiot/Isabella county line to the south Mt. Pleasant Exit. Both the northbound and southbound lanes have been closed due to numerous accidents in those areas.
The Ottawa County Sheriff Department is urging motorists to use extreme caution due to hazardous road conditions throughout the county – travel only if necessary.
Holland Department of Public Safety says M-40 is back open from Tulip City Truck Stop south of I-196 however closed south of I-196 however closed south of 143rd.
From the Montcalm Co. Sheriff’s Dept.: DUE TO THE HIGH WINDS, VISIBILITY ON AREA ROADS IS NEAR ZERO. LAW ENFORCEMENT AND EMERGENCY RESPONDERS
ARE HANDLING NUMEROUS CRASHES BUT ARE HAVING DIFFICULTY DUE TO THE HIGH WINDS
AND ZERO VISIBILITY. PLEASE ASK THAT EVERYONE REMAIN AT HOME AND DO NOT VENTURE
OUT UNLESS AN EMERGENCY UNTIL THE VISIBILITY IMPROVES.

From the Allegan Co. Sheriff’s Dept.: Deputies and
Troopers are responding to numerous crashes, several involving injuries, on the
northwest side of Allegan County. Visiblity is zero in many places.
Please stay off the roads on the NW side of Allegan County until wind
subsides. I am aware of road closures at 58th St. Between 136th Ave. and
138th Ave. and 147th Ave and 40th.
Blowing snow is causing near-whiteout conditions at times. It’s not because the snow is really heavy, more a result of the wind.
