President says law goes beyond farmersWASHINGTON — President Obama issued an executive order Monday morning that will allow sanctions to be imposed on select Russian officials and individuals, the web site Politico reported.

In a release, the White House said Russian actions related to the Crimea “undermine democratic processes and institutions in Ukraine” and justify the sanctions.

The executive order follows one signed two weeks ago. Both authorize the Secretary of the Treasury and the Secretary of State to impose further sanctions. The White House release actually named individuals, ranging from an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin to leaders in Crimea who have led the movement to separate from Ukraine.
