KALAMAZOO, Mich. (April 13, 2014) — Crowds by the thousands on the campus of Western Michigan University had to be controlled with tear gas Saturday

Kalamazoo Public Safety officers said they were called in for what they’re calling a “house crawl event” at about 2 p.m.

Several people called them to the area of Lafayette and Redwood Streets with complaints of open intoxication and excessive noise.

Investigators said party goers were initially peaceful but that violence erupted once the crowd grew to about 2,000 people.

KDPS said that while trying to keep the peace people began throwing rocks and bottles at the officers.

A police zone was put into place and officers said several announcement were made asking people to clear the area. However, people refused leading to the use of tear gas.

No one was hurt but one person was taken into custody at the scene.
