ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Apr. 25, 2014) — Mitch McGary is forgoing his final two years of eligibility and declaring for the NBA Draft. He didn’t really have any other choice, because he wasn’t going to be able to play for Michigan next season anyhow.
McGary tested positive for marijuana after the Wolverines 73-71 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. Since it was an NCAA-administered test the penalty for a first offense is a one-year suspension from all athletic activity.
“I take full responsibility for this poor choice and want to apologize to everyone, especially those I have grown close to during my fabulous two years at the University of Michigan,” said McGary through a University of Michigan release. “We were notified of that result after the Final Four. I regret thoroughly disappointing my family, coaches and administration. Despite all of this they have been understanding and helpful over the last couple of weeks.”
McGary played only eight games this season for the Wolverines after becoming a breakout star in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. While only a sophomore at Michigan, McGary will turn 22 on June 6.
